CAT 17 paper was just as expected. DI LR came tough for the third consecutive year. VA and QA were doable again. Am sharing my slot 2 experience and analysis of CAT 2017 paper.
VRC: 5 passages with 3 or 6 questions – total 24 questions. Level of difficulty easy to moderate. Easy: approx 18 questions and Moderate: approx 6 questions. The moderate ones were purpose based or central theme finding based or conclusion based types. The options were close and confusing in such questions. However, all questions could be brought down to options in no time. Hence, overall level was EASY. VR was relatively tricky. Odd one out and summary based questions were easy to moderate while Para Jumbles were moderate to difficult. VR level overall was moderate. A VA 99 percentile candidate could have gone through the entire paper and marked 28-30 questions.
A 99 percentile score in the section should be in the range 63-66. An 85 percentile score in the section should be in the range 43-45.
DI LR was difficult. 2 sets were easy to moderate and 2 others were moderate. Rest 50% was difficult. Paper was mostly puzzle type with some missing data based tables and a rare LR caselet.
Overall people had to use brains and not any frameworks learnt in structured DI LR classes. Selection was important as one could have easily wasted time in 1-2 difficult sets and made life tougher.
Those who managed to select a few and solve will score well. A 99 percentile candidate could have solved these 4 sets.
99 percentile score should be in the range 46-49. An 85 percentile sectional score should be in the range 22-25.
QA was easy. Questions were distributed across topics. Most questions were one liner questions which are typically at the class sheet level of a good coaching.
A bright student of mine has done all 34 in 45 minutes and is expecting a perfect 100 in the section.
The paper was simple and any prepared student should have picked and solved quite a lot of questions.
An 85 percentile score should be in the range 32-34. A 99 percentile score should be in the range 60-64.
Video analysis: Slot 1
Video analysis: Slot 2
Expected 99.5 percentile score - 173–176
Expected 95 percentile score: 138–142
Expected 90 percentile score: 117–120
Expected 85 percentile score: 105-108
Expected 80 percentile score: 94-97
Students can expect IIM Calls to start at around 92 percentile overall which should be a score close to 125.
Break up for at least 1 IIM Call will look something like this:
Sectional cut offs for 1 IIM Call(Prediction)
DI LR: 25
Overall cut off for 1 IIM Call(Prediction)
All the best!
