We can’t really change it. So let’s face it.
When most of the classmates of yours is boasting about their academic records and counting their application being rated 10 out of 10, it’s of no worth to regret your past performance. Gear Up!! It’s high time to analyse that, is it really an uphill task to get into the top MBA colleges with average records? Academic records as being one of the parameters of selection will always provide an edge but there is almost nothing to lose if you fall around an average cadre. What one could do is target specific colleges (in top 20) which still do not have any academics related criteria, or at least haven’t mentioned anything explicitly. By doing a little bit of research and analysis one can easily find that there are at least 70% of the top colleges which offer freebies to an average academic record candidate. One has a good chance of converting them even with poor records. What one could do is to target those specific colleges and make comprehensive lists of it.
IIM’s : With lots of new IIMs coming into the picture and their varied parameters, it’s not a herculean task to get into one of them with an average academic record. Even some of the older once also offer academic and diversity related freebies.
FMS (Faculty of Management Studies): You can manage an interview call from this college even with average marks in your grads and schools if you have a good percentile in CAT. The rest all depends upon your performance in other rounds of selection. At least you will get a fair chance to prove your mettle. With high weightage to the CAT score, one can easily convert this college with good performance in other rounds.
XLRI (Xavier Labour Relations Institute)&XIMB: There is no mention of any kind of academic criteria for this centre of excellence officially. This institute serves as a saviour for the lots of lot with average academics. There is no dearth of examples every year where people with good extracurricular activity and work experience made into it.
IIFT & NMIMS: These two colleges have their separate entrance test with almost no significant weightage to the academic score and a very brilliant performance in the test with all sectionals being cleared can almost assure you a coveted seat. A course in International Business which is very rare and is not available even in some of the top colleges makes it a differentiator.
MDI (Management Development Institute): No worries for the one who get a percentile above 98. One can easily manage a call from this college despite of dismal show of academic records. At least calls are given to everyone who applied last year and got a percentile above 96.
So, is it possible for a student like Vijay and Vishakha to get into the top notch college of their dreams??A clear analysis and plan will help in making their target college lists and getting into the top B Schools.
Gear up and Cheer up!!
